People are staring at screens EVERYWHERE. And all the time.
As a 3rd grader, one of the worst insults imaginable (only slightly worse than a case of the cooties) was to be called Four Eyes.
Today, I think we've got reason to be called Square Eyes.
(I'm not exempt from the slur - I'm penning this post from my phone.)
When we've got our eyes squared on our screens, we lose touch with our surroundings. I know I'm not the only one who has been so attentive to a game or article or project that I've missed out on a real-world moment. I've seen injuries from twisted ankles to broken homes that can be boiled down to some degree of Square Eyes Syndrome. We become so absorbed in the tiny glowing window into the World Wide Web that we lose our peripheral perspective on the things within reach.
This misfocus is nothing new. We've had our heads in the game for millennia. We become so wrapped up in the rat race of keeping up with the Joneses that we forget the supernatural war that is waged invisibly around us. We become so concerned with getting an education and a good job and sound retirement that we lose sight of the setting of our existence - a world fallen to sin, allowed to play out in high-def as a demonstration to the galaxies that God is just. We forget that our actions are observed as testament to whom we pledge allegiance in this war of good and evil - and we cannot serve two masters. We are so narrowly focused on our successes in this short life that we ignore the implications of eternity.
My challenge: Get your head out of the game. Open your square eyes, whether to wide ovals or narrow crescents, to what God and good is doing in the world around you, and join in on the good.
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12, NLT
