Things Foreigners Do / Lo que los extranjeros hacen

  • Stare at you with really intense, almost scary stares as you speak to them in an attempt to understand more than "I....bought...the park....eat.... You?"
  • Stop in the middle of the sidewalk because they need to read their map.
  • Stop in the middle of the sidewalk to read advertisements, and get really excited because they can understand "Need money? Here! Fast and easy."
  • Walk around with their hands clamped over their valuables.
  • Take pictures of strange things, like the ground.
  • Smile and nod in response to whatever you say.
  • Smile and nod in response to whatever you said, then admit they didn't understand at all.
  • Pay way more than you asked for, because they can't understand prices in your language. (200c? Might as well pay 10000c.)
  • Answer incoherently or vaguely, using very simple and repetitive phrases like, "more or less", "I think that yes", or "thank you" in ways that you'd never believe someone could think up.
  • Say "thank you" WAY too much.
  • Take a full minute to say, "I came by bus", then get a very proud look on their faces.
  • Sit/stand/walk very quietly, because trying to come up with something to say is really hard and would take more of your time than it's worth.
I'm a foreigner. I do all of these things.
